What's often called "Stomach Flu" is not really the flu, but “gastroenteritis” or an infection of the stomach and intestines. The flu is different.
Many people refer to gastroenteritis as "stomach flu." Real flu affects only your respiratory system. Gastroenteritis, on the other hand, happens when your stomach and intestines are inflamed and irritated. Viruses and bacteria are the most common causes of gastroenteritis.
What Are the Symptoms of Gastroenteritis?
  • Watery, usually nonbloody diarrhea — bloody diarrhea usually means you have a different, more severe infection.
  • Abdominal cramps and pain.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Occasional muscle aches or headache.
  • Low-grade fever.
  • Gastroenteritis can cause “dehydration”, which can be more serious than the infection itself. It is usually easily reversed by drinking lots of fluids.
    Treatment for Gastroenteritis:
  • Don’t eat solid foods for a while in order to give your stomach a rest .
  • Drink plenty of liquids, and try taking small sips at regular intervals .
  • Try to eat easily digestible foods gradually, and don’t force yourself to eat if eating makes you feel nauseated .
  • Avoid some types of foods until you feel better, such as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and high-fat foods .
